Merry Christmas from all of us at PLAANK
With only five days to go until the big day, I’m sure like us here at PLAANK you are on wind down to Christmas Day…
In fact, we close tomorrow for the festive season and re-open on Wednesday 3rd January.
Many of us have our ‘set’ Christmas traditions that we repeat year after year. Singing carols, eating way too much turkey or even playing charades are all things that we partake in only over Christmas!
Traditions tend to pass down through the generations and whilst many have evolved with technology, some have simply been lost!
The chocolate Yule log, a Swiss roll type cake covered in thick chocolate, actually originates from a wooden log as you might expect.
Dating back to Celtic times, a huge log was selected from the forest on Christmas Eve and decorated with ribbons. Wine was poured over it before it was lit using a piece of the previous years’ log. It was kept burning until twelfth night, as the Celts believed that the sun stood still for 12 days at the end of December.
By burning the log brightly, they believed that the sun would be encouraged to move and make the days start to grow longer again! Equally if the log went out, then terrible luck would occur!
How times have changed! The nearest we now get to burning a Yule log is lighting an open fire or log burner…
Reflecting on the previous year in front of a real fire sounds idyllic, but it is important to take time out and assess the highs and lows of 2017. Hopefully, like us here at PLAANK you have had an amazing 2017?
It goes without saying that this success is largely down to you, our customers, and we can only thank you for your custom and continued support.
So, from us all at PLAANK, we wish you a very merry Christmas and a prosperous 2018.
